Boris Makarov is a multidisciplinary artist working with ceramics, photography, and graphic media. In his practice, ceramics serves as a central medium that unites the study of organic forms and natural processes with their reinterpretation through a sensual, intuitive methodology. Drawing inspiration from the textures of minerals, tree bark, plants, and stone, the artist translates bodily and emotional experience into material form, creating objects imbued with a sense of artifact—existing at the intersection of reality and its associative image. Through an empirical, hands-on approach to sculpting, Makarov embraces collaboration with the material, allowing intuition to guide the process.
He has completed several educational programs in contemporary art and photography, including Igor Mukhin’s workshop at the Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia (2018–2019), the Polezreniya School of Photography (2017–2018), and the Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art (2022–2023). He also studied at the Joseph Backstein Institute of Contemporary Art in the program New Artistic Strategies (2021–2022) and at the online school More Than a Project in Artistic Research (2025).Since 2020, Makarov has participated in solo and group exhibitions, art fairs, residencies, and collaborations with local brands in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and across Russia. He lives and works in Moscow.
